Need
*For the first time in U.S. history, obesity is expected to lower U.S. life span for the next generation.
*Obesity rates among kids 6-19 is 16%, up 45% from 1994. This leads to chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer or gallbladder disease in adulthood.
*Obesity costs $21 billion in direct/indirect health costs and lost productivity in California and more than $150 billion nationwide. The figure will grow by more than 10% per year with medicare and medicade financing almost half. (Source: CDC)
*Reduction in school funding in states where attendance determines the level of state funding for schools because of lost attendance due to illnesses related to obesity. Obese kids miss on average 9 days per school year. (Total cost/yr.: LA=$15 million, Chicago=$9 million, NYC=$28 million)
*2004 California Department of Education study indicates a positive relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement in 5th, 7th, 9th graders.
